LOUDON CLASSIC - This June the Loudon Classic is celebrating their 100th annual race. Although the first AMA sanctioned race was held in 1934, for a number of years prior to that, informal races were held during the annual Gypsy Tours.
From a rally, to dirt road racing, it then moved to the Belknap circuit, and on to Bryar Motorsports Park, where it enjoyed its finest years as an AMA event. When the Bahre family bough the property and put up the present day New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the race continued under AMA sanction until 2001.
Safety concerns regarding proper runoff area after Miguel Duhamel broke his leg at Loudon and vociferous opposition against the facility by Mat Mladin led to the AMA removing the circuit from its calendar. The race is Sanctioned now by North East Motorcycle Road Racing (NEMRR) and formerly by the Loudon Road Racing Series (LRRS).
The Loudon Classic will run under NEMRR Middleweight GP rules and will also allow all machines legal for the MotoAmerica Supersport class. The total purse of $250,000 is the largest purse offered of any motorcycle road race in the USA. It has attracted a large field back to New Hampshire for the 100th running. The Loudon Classic will consist of three days of racing with NEMRR races on Friday, June 16th and Sunday, June 18th, with the four professional classes running on Saturday the 17th.
The purse and prestige of this historical motorcycle road racing event has already drawn some big names, many who presently compete in MotoAmerica. The long list of entries will require some whittling down through qualifying to fit onto the 1.6 mile circuit. Those on the entry list include Josh Herrin, Richie Escalante, Josh Hayes, Teagg Hobbs and Brandon Paasch.
